Kenley, thanks so much for sharing this. I attended my first SXSW last year as a wide-eyed newbie who didn't have a whole lot of tech under my belt and wanted to meet up with friends I made from all over different online channels and social networks. Having this assessment being related to libraries and librarians is what I needed to hear and will certainly help as plan on starting an MLIS program in the near future and looking to focus on emerging technology and academia. As always, a pleasure. All the best to you.

Yes, progress has been made and I hope this little blog will be another nudge (if the right people can read it).

I agree. ALA conferences are way behind in tech - but they have been improving the last few years - like having wireless in many rooms. Perhaps ALA just doesn't have the financial resources or is too spread out (many of the hotels won't give wifi).

I've said before that ALA and ACRL could learn a few things from EDUCAUSE which I think is the gold standard for a tech conference. We don't even do such a good job of providing post-conference videos, presentation material, etc.

yes! i had a similar experience last year at the NMC (http://www.nmc.org/) conference, i liked that i could network with people beforehand, during and after using their social network. And I couldn't agree more about ALA learning from these different models--
